Statistix — the spending analysis we're working on

A receipt carries far more information than you need to split a bill. Since we’re already reading every item, price and shop off it, that data can be turned into a picture of where your money actually goes. That’s what we’re building — it’s called Statistix, and it’s currently in testing.

What it’s meant to show

Categories. How much went on food, household goods, alcohol and things for the home in a given month. Categorisation happens automatically when the receipt is read, so there’s nothing to tag by hand.

Shops. Where you leave the most, and how that shifts over time. The answer can be surprising — particularly when it turns out your biggest spend isn’t the hypermarket but the corner shop you drop into every day.

Savings on promotions. How much you actually saved through discounts, calculated from real receipts rather than the shop’s own claims.

Price comparison across shops. The most ambitious part: if you buy the same product in several places, your own receipt data shows where it’s genuinely cheaper.

All of it in your own currency, including when you shop abroad.

Why it’s taking a while

Two reasons.

First: categorisation quality. Product names on receipts are abbreviated to the edge of legibility — “MLEKO UHT 3,2 1” or “PIECZ MIESZ 500G”. Mapping those to the right category with sensible accuracy took considerable work and still isn’t perfect. Statistics built on badly categorised data are worse than no statistics, because they look credible.

Second: whether it means anything with few receipts. A chart built from three purchases says nothing while appearing to say something. We’re still working out the minimum number of receipts at which summaries are worth showing at all.

When

We’re not giving a date, because we don’t want to move it later. The feature is in narrow testing and will roll out gradually.

If you’d like to influence what gets built next, visit What’s Next — you can vote there on features, including spending categorisation and the cross-shop price comparison. Votes genuinely set the order of work.

And if you have feedback on how Paragonix reads your receipts — especially where it reads them wrong — tell us. Those reports are the most valuable thing we get.
