Bank transfer QR codes — cutting a repayment down to fifteen seconds

The last step of settling up looks trivial: just make the transfer. In practice it’s exactly where everything stalls.

To pay someone back you have to find their account number, copy twenty-six digits, check them, enter the amount and a reference. That takes two or three minutes and requires both people to be free at the same moment. Which is why repayments so often end at “I’ll do it tonight”.

What the QR code does

Paragonix generates a bank transfer QR code in the standard Polish banks use. Whoever is paying scans it in their banking app and gets a pre-filled transfer form: payee, account number and amount.

One thing left — confirm.

The whole repayment shrinks from “I need to find your account number” to about fifteen seconds at the table, before anyone has even stood up.

Why it beats sending an account number over chat

Three reasons, all practical:

  • You can’t mistype a digit. An account number is twenty-six characters. Copied by hand it’s sometimes wrong, and a transfer to a stranger’s account is a problem that takes weeks to unwind.
  • The amount is already filled in, so nobody pays back “roughly that much” or rounds in their own favour.
  • It happens immediately. Anything that can be done on the spot usually is. Anything requiring you to come back to it later often never happens at all.

How to use it

The code appears when settling up inside a group, on the side of whoever is owed money. You show it on your phone screen and the other person scans it with their banking app.

For the code to be generated you need your account number saved in your profile. That’s a one-off.

Once the transfer clears, record the repayment in Paragonix — the group balance zeroes out and reminders stop arriving.

The three pieces together

This is the last of three posts about recurring settlements. Together they form one chain:

  1. Groups work out who owes whom and offset debts, so there are as few transfers as possible.
  2. Reminders take the chasing off your shoulders.
  3. QR codes make the repayment itself a matter of seconds.

Each step on its own helps a little. Only together do they make settlements between friends close themselves out, without anyone having to be the money person.
